The Uses and Benefits of Acupressure Treatment

Acupressure treatment Aliso Viejo, CA

Acupressure treatment is an alternative to modern medicine that is rising in popularity. As found in traditional Chinese medicine, the body has over 14 meridians connecting our organs, upon which lie acupuncture and acupressure points. It is believed that various symptoms and health conditions result from a blockage in the energy along these meridians.

What exactly is acupressure?

Often referred to as acupuncture without needles, acupressure involves applying pressure to certain points on the body along the aforementioned meridians that are believed to connect to the source of the pain. For example, applying pressure to the space about three-finger widths above the inner ankle bone is said to improve problems with the spleen. It is theorized that this works because the pressure releases endorphins to relieve the pain.

Uses for acupressure

Generally, acupressure is used to treat nausea, fatigue, minor aches and pains. It is common for people with the following conditions to seek acupressure treatment:

  • Headaches
  • Motion sickness
  • Chemotherapy
  • Pregnancy
  • Arthritis
  • Depression/anxiety

How does an acupressure treatment work?

Using the acupressure massage technique, therapists target local points, which are the points on the body where the pain actually exists, or trigger points which are connected to the point of pain/discomfort along the meridians. Pressure is typically applied with the thumb, fingers, and palm. Depending on where the pain is, self-acupressure can work as well. As long as you know what points are connected to what parts of the body, you can apply your own pressure and alleviate these discomforts.

There are many charts you can find online that map out these points for you. These charts show the 12 main meridians in the body and the pressure points along them. The six-leg meridians include the stomach, gallbladder, urinary bladder, liver, spleen and kidney, while the arm meridians include the lungs, triple warmer, small and large intestines, pericardium and heart. Each of these meridians is labeled with a letter on the charts and the specific points along them associate with different symptoms and health conditions.

A common form of self-acupressure uses a foot reflexology chart. There are countless points on the foot that connect to important organs such as the lungs, liver, kidneys and brain. Simply giving yourself a foot massage is a quick, easy way to improve minor problems as long as you know which points to apply pressure to. Just one point can solve a problem you have, however, it is also common to apply pressure to a series of points in order to promote overall wellness.

Benefits of acupressure treatment

Although there is a lack of studies on the permanent effects of acupressure, there is still research being done on the topic. Some evidence has shown a link between acupressure and pain relief in sports injuries. Like any type of massage, acupressure is very relaxing and has many benefits in other aspects of your life. Acupressure has shown to help with digestive issues, sleep, stress, anxiety, chronic pains, nausea and much more. Additionally, the therapy stimulates circulatory, lymphatic, hormonal, and immune systems. In short, it helps the body reach a state in which it can heal itself.
