Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that consists of gently placing and stimulating disposable needles at strategic points in the body. The needles are solid, single-use sterile needles as thin as a human hair. We refer to the needles as “cat whiskers.” We understand that regardless of the necessity, no one enjoys the aspect of acupuncture the first time; especially children. However, we specialize in pediatric care and can help children slowly adapt to the treatment.

For the acupuncture treatment, we place the needles at specific acupoints on the surface of the skin to alter biochemical and physiological conditions in the body. By doing this, we can stimulate sensory receptors, which stimulate nerves that transmit impulses to the brain. The brain receives the impulses and then sends serotonin and endorphins; both of these are the body’s natural pain-killing hormones. While the procedure may sound intense, we can keep the process calm and peaceful. Many people may not realize that acupuncture can be useful in pediatric as well as adult care.

While many children and a number of adults harbor a fear of needles, the acupuncture needles we use in treatment will not bring about the same pain due to the diameter. However, preparing a child for an acupuncture appointment may not be as easy as some hope. At Open Mind Modalities, we can help keep children calm and relaxed during the procedure.

With needles, people may usually associate words such as “pain” or “uncomfortable.” While we set up a warm and welcoming environment in our office, children may still be afraid at the thought of acupuncture. Not telling the child until the treatment is more likely to cause the child to freak out rather than keep him or her calm. One tip to help prepare the child for an acupuncture appointment is to avoid using words such as “poke”, “painful” or even saying that “The procedure won’t be that painful.” After all, the needles we use should not hurt the patient and should feel more like a light touch.

One important aspect to pediatric acupuncture is the introduction. The needles we use are no larger than a single hair, making them difficult to feel. We will help introduce the child to these needles and the acupuncture treatment at a healthy pace. While this process can take time, our goal is to help the child understand the acupuncture treatment and become more comfortable with the process. Since the needles are as thin and small as a human hair, the child should not feel pain from them during the treatment.

Other parents will bring something the child enjoys such as a toy, book, or other item that can keep the child distracted as we go over the details of the procedure. It is crucial to explain the process to the child in a calm manner and avoid panicking the child. We will not perform the procedure if the child is uncomfortable or cannot remain calm; this is for the child’s safety. If you have any concerns about your child not warming up to the idea of acupuncture, bring the concerns up with us during the consultation.

We will be able to address all concerns and work with the patient or parents of the patient to provide the best level of care possible. Pediatric acupuncture requires a joint effort from our team, the parents and the patient, as the procedure will be much more difficult if the child is not willing. The parent can help the child ease into the idea of acupuncture treatment by explaining that the procedure will help the child feel better. Additionally, a parent can be treated first to show the child the benefits of acupuncture.

Acupuncture may not be able to treat serious illnesses, but it can provide relief and ease pain. Through acupuncture, children can receive the natural relief they need to live a comfortable life. We will begin by going through a medical examination of the child’s condition and past health history. After we have all of the necessary information, we will personalize a treatment plan for the individual patient. We will answer any questions and address any concerns before beginning the procedure.

The acupuncture procedure may take 45 minutes to an hour for each session, depending on the condition of the patient. Since each child is different, there is a chance that we will have to try a different method to ease the child into acupuncture treatment. Regardless, we will strive to find the healthiest way to help your child recover and lead a life free of pain. The last thing any parent will want to do is avoid seeking treatment methods for a child. Acupuncture can help treat the pain that would make the child’s life more difficult.

There’s no reason to continue struggling with the pain each day. While pediatric acupuncture may be the right treatment for your child, we can determine what the best treatment will be by scheduling a consultation. Seek treatment for you or your child today and begin the path to a better quality of life. Call us at (949) 229-4033.
